Austin R. Atom History Timeline

Events

Leucippus

500 BC

Came up with the atomic theory which stated that “The universe is composed of two elements: the atoms and the void in which they exist and move”

Empedocles

460 BC

Separated indivisible matter into four elements: water, fire , and air.

Democritus

460 BC

Democritus hypothesized that atoms cannot be destroyed, differ in size, shape and temperature, are always moving, and are invisible. Stated that atoms were miniscule quantities of matter. He believed that there are an infinite number of atoms.

John Dalton

1803 AD

Developed an atomic theory stating that there were multiple kinds of atoms and that the spherical atoms had measurable properties of mass.

J.J. Thomson

1897 AD

Discovered the electron and noticed that an atom has parts or can be divided. He also concluded that atoms are made of positive cores and negatively charged particles within it.

Ernest Rutherford

1899 AD

Discarded the Plum Pudding Model and reasoned that the only way the alpha particles could be deflected backwards was if most of the mass in an atom was concentrated in a nucleus. Comes up with nucleus.

Montreal Canadiens hockey club established

December 4, 1909 AD

Niels Bohr

1913 AD

Discarded the Plum Pudding Model and reasoned that the only way the alpha particles could be deflected backwards was if most of the mass in an atom was concentrated in a nucleus. Comes up with nucleus.

Werner Heisenberg

1925 AD

He calculated the behavior of electrons, and subatomic particles that also make up an atom.

Erwin Schrödinger

1926 AD

Schrödinger used mathematical equations to describe the likelihood of finding an electron in a certain position.

James Chadwick

1932 AD

Discovered the neutron proving Rutherford’s atomic theory correct, which revolutionized the understanding of the atomic structure.

Manon Rhéaume makes sports history

September 23, 1992 AD

Manon Rhéaume (my cousin) becomes the first female to play in the NHL as well as in any of the 4 major North American professional sport leagues

IBM creates stop motion film with atoms

April 30, 2013 AD

IBM creates stop motion film “A Boy and His Atom” by moving actual atoms
