Christopher Columbus landed on Puerto Rico's shores on the 19th of November during the second of his four voyages to the new world

Juan Ponce de Leo`n founds the first spanish settlement in Caparra.

Construction

1539

Construction begins on San Felipe del Morro castle to defend the island against invaders

British Forces

1595

British forces under the command of Sir Frances Drake attack Puerto Rico but are fought off by the spanish; threee years later, the british briefly occupy the island.

Dutch's attempt

1625

The dutch attempt unsuccesfully to seize control of the island.

British invades again

1797

British forces invade again and are fought off again; the attempt marks the last foreign invasion of the island for more than 100 years

The Cry of Lares

1868

The Cry of Lares marks the first major uprising against spanish rule.

Spain slavery

1873

Spian abolishes slavery on the island .

1895

The Puerto Rico flag flies over the island for the first time.
