Exiling the Shah

January 1, 1979

As political tensions risen up in Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah, and his family are forced into an exile.

Khomeini returns

February 1, 1979

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returns to Iran after serving 14 years of exile in Iraq and France. He was exiled for opposing the regime.

52 Hostages

November 4, 1979

52 American hostages are held in the US embassy in Iran by the Islamic Militants. They demanded the US to deport the Shah to face his trial in Iran.

The Shah of Iran dies

July 27, 1980

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi dies of cancer in Egypt.

Iraq invades Iran

September 22, 1980 - August 20, 1988

The Iraqis go to war against the Iranians by invading. The war goes on for the next 8 years.

A Big Mistake

July 3, 1988

The USS Vincennes shoot down an Iran Air Airbus consisting of 290 passengers traveling from Tehran to Dubai, mistakenly.

Ayatollah Khomeini Dies

June 3, 1989

On 4 June, President Khamenei is appointed as new supreme leader


June 21, 1990

A major earthquake strikes Iran, killing approximately 40,000 people.

USA Charge Iran With 'Terrorism.'

March 1, 1995

The US establishes oil and trade sanctions over Iran's alleged sponsorship of 'terrorism' seeking to acquire nuclear arms and bitterness to Iran. Iran denies the charges.

Mohammad Khatami is the New President

May 1, 1997

Mohammad Khatami wins the presidential election with 70% of the vote. He was on basis of reformations and liberalization.

Taliban Troubles Iran

September 1, 1998

Iran deploys thousands of troops on its border with the neighboring country, Afghanistan, shortly after Taliban take responsibility for killing eight Iranian diplomats.

George Bush Causes Outrage in Iran

January 2, 2002

George Bush labels Iran and an axis of evil and accuse Iran of developing long-range missiles. The speech causes chaos amongst people of Iran.
