Treaty of Paris

Feb 10, 1763

This treaty ended the French and British war. This War cost Britain a lot of money, so they decided to tax the colonists. The tension between the two can be traced back here.

Sugar act

Apr 5, 1764

This was the first of the taxes that Britain forced onto the colonies. This tax increased the price of sugar. The colonists rebelled, and the tax was repealed.

Stamp Act

Mar 22, 1765

The Britain´s second tax forced onto the colonists. This required a stamp to be put on to any paper products. This was also repealed.

Townshend acts

Jun 29, 1767

This was a series of taxes placed on multiple goods such as sugar, paper, and tea. The colonists rebelled and this was repealed, except for one tax

Boston Massacre

Mar 5, 1770

Here, the colonists decided to provoke some British sentries into firing their guns. This was blown out of proportion, and was used to cast the British in a bad light.

Tea act

May 10, 1773

This was a tax put on tea. This angered the colonists because it took away the freedom to choose. The tax was repealed.

Boston Tea Party

Dec 17, 1773

In response to the Tea Act, a few of the Sons of Liberty members, a radical colonial liberation group, boarded some British ships and destroyed all of the tea there. This caused the tea act to be repealed.

Intolerable Acts

Apr 22, 1774

This was a string of new laws that the colonists absolutely despised. This closed Boston Harbour, cancelled Massachusetts charter, sent royal officials to Britain too try them, forced colonists to house British soldiers, gave land to Quebec, and made a military officer the governor of Massachusetts.

Lexington and Concord

Apr 19, 1775

The colonists had weapons stored in Lexington and Concord, so the British decided to go there and seize the weapons from the Colonists. However, Paul Revere decided to ride to Lexington and Concord to warn the colonists that the British were coming. The colonists successfully drove the British out.

America drives the British out of Boston

Mar 4, 1776

America took Dorchester Heights, and aimed cannons down on Boston. The British surrendered, and fled, with some Loyalists.

Declaration of Independence

Jul 4, 1776

This document told the British that the Colonists were breaking away from them. This caused the war to take a new turn.

Battle of Trenton

Dec 26, 1776

To boost morale in his army, George Washington decided to attack the Hessian troops by the Delaware River. He successfully drove them out.

British capture Philadelphia

Sep 26, 1777

William Howe had his sights on Philadelphia, and wanted to capture it at all costs. He does so, but he has to abandon another campaign, which could have meant British victory for the war.

Battle of Saratoga

Oct 7, 1777

During this battle, the Americans were able to successfully stop the British plans of dividing and conquering. This battle caused the French to join the American cause

Battle of Yorktown

Sep 28, 1781

This was the final major battle of the American Revolution. French and American troops surrounded the British forces, and laid siege to them. The British was forced to surrender.

Treaty of Paris

Sep 3, 1783

This treaty ended the American Revolution. Britain now had to accept that the Colonies were now an independent country, the United States of America.
