FDA is Established

1862

It was a part of the United States Department of Agriculture and focused on under the Chemical Division

13 children die due to tetanus infected vaccinations

1902

Pure Food and Drug Act

June 1906

Theodore Roosevelt signed to pass this act. This called for drugs to meet standards of strength, quality, and purity.

FDA Setback

1912

Supreme court stated that law enforcing regulation of drugs did not apply to false therapeutic claims

Harrison Narcotics Act

1914

Individuals could no longer purchase opium without a prescription, and it became harder to obtain opium for nonmedical purposes.

FDA's name is changed to Food, Drug, and insecticide Administration

1927

FDA's Name changes to Food, Drug Administration

1930

The Federal Food, and Cosmetics Act

1938

Manufacturers needed to prove to the FDA that a drug was safe for consumption, before putting it on the shelves.

FDA is no longer under the United States Department of Agriculture

1940

Durham-Humphrey Amendment

1951

Certain drugs require a physician's order and supervision.

Agency is transferred over to the Health, Education, and Welfare.

1953

Kefauver-Harris Amendment

1962

Gave specific authority to approve a manufacturer's marketing application before a drug could be a made available.
