Events

The first human beings arrived in Chile.

12,000 BC

Tribes become semisedentary and the Chinchorro become the dominant civilization in the area. They experiment with seeds and plants and discover agriculture.

8,000 BC - 1,000 BC

The Chinchorro hunter- gatherers in Chile's Atacama desert, begin mummifying their dead.

5000 BC

The first domesticated plants began to appear in northern Chile, and cultural and economic trade with the tribes of southern peru and northwestern Argentina brought new agricultural techniques.

2000 BC

Inhabitants become sedentary and the Mapuche emerge as a distinctive tribe.

200 AD

Tiwanaku Empire of Lago Titicaca power waned, and regional kingdoms sprung up across the north.

1000 AD

The statue( Moai) building began in Easter Island.

1100 - 1700

The Incas invade the North of Chile, their expansion was halted by the Mapuche in the battle of the Maule.

Europeans First arrived in Chile

Indigenous Araucanian people successfully resist spanish invasion in chile.

1535

Chile was colonized

1540

Pedro de Valdivia founded Santiago de Chile.Later on they found La Serena and Concepcion.

1541

Araucanians capture and kill Valdivia.

1553

Francis Drake attacks the coast of Chile during his circumnavigation around the world.

1578

All cities south of bio-bio river are demolished, in what is now Destruction Of The 7 cities.

1602

Beginning of the Defensive War phase( promoted Luis de Valdivia) in the Arauco war.

1612

The Viceroalty of Peru estimates 30,000 to 42,000 spaniards to have died in Chile which half would've died by Arauco war.

1664

A Mapuche-Spanish peace treaty is signed at a parliament in Negrete.

1726

HMS Wager is wrecked off the coast of Western Patagonia.

1741

The Spanish empire exiles all Jesuits. Ancud is founded. Chiloe becomes part of the Vice royalty of Peru.

1767

French Revolution began.

Fernando Marquez de la plata became president

1811

Spain regains control over Chile again

1814

Battle of Chacabuco began.

1817

Chilean Declaration of independence treaty was signed.

february 12, 1818 - April 5, 1818

President Manuel Montt liberalises constitution and reduces privileges of landowners and churches

1851 - 1861

Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia at war with Spain.

1866

The war of pacific began, Chilean troops were occupied with the then- Bolivian port city Anfofagasta.

1879

The War of Pacific ends with a signing of a truce to Bolivia.

1884

Chilean Civil War.

1891 - 1892

Alessandri is elected president

1920

Alessandri went to exile , upon which country was ruled by military people.

September 15, 1924

Alessandri returned on the issue that the constitution be rewritten.

March 20, 1925

A new constitution is drawn up for Chile.

August 30, 1925

Alessandri becomes president AGAIN.

1932

President Alessandri declared a state- of- seige

1938

Gabriela Mistral is awarded nobel prize, for being the first south- american writer

1945

Women are granted the right to vote.

1949

jorge Alessandri was elected president

September 4, 1952

Frei is elected president of chile.

1964

The socialist salvador allende elected for president.

1970

Pablo Neruda wins nobel prize for being the 2nd writer.

1971

The army led by Augusto Pinochet leads a coup and overthrows the government of Allende. Pinochet introduces a repressive regime.

1973

Pinochet introduces a new constitution.

1980

Beagle conflict- treaty of peace and friendship of 1984 between chile and argentina.

1984

After elections Patricio Aylwin becomes president of Chile.

1989

Augusto Pinochet steps down.

1990

Transition period, president is Patricio

1990 - 1994

Pinochet is arrested in england

1998

Chile signs an agreement with european union.

2002

Chile finalizes a free trade argeement with U.S.A

2003

Chile signs a free trade agreement with south Korea.

2004

Chileans elected their first female president, Michelle Bachelet of the Socialist Party.

2006

Sebastian Pinera is elected president.
