FALL OF POLAND

Approx. September 1939

The German Blitzkrieg defeats the Poles.Poland is split between Germany and USSR.

PHONY WAR

Approx. November 1939

A five month period of preparation with very little "war" happening. This lead American's to deem it a "phony war'.

GERMANY'S INVASION OF HOLLAND, BELGIUM, AND FRANCE

Approx. 10 May 1940

Germany used the Blitzkrieg method again to attack Holland, Belgium, and France. Belgium held out longer than France and Holland.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN

12 August 1940 - 30 September 1940

The first major turning point of the war, Germany was well matched. Churchill said "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few".

GERMAN INVASION OF RUSSIA

22 June 1941

Hitler had mixed motives for invading Russia. Even in spring of 1942 he was still unable to capture certain areas.

PEARL HARBOR

Dec 7, 1941

An attack on a USA naval base in Hawaii by the Japanese. This lead to the United States joining the war.

BATTLE OF MIDWAY ISLAND

June 1942

At Midway Island the Americans fend off a Japanese attack. This was a crucial turning point of the battle for the Pacific.

BATTLE OF STALINGRAD

August 1942 - 2 February 1943

At Stalingrad the German's were forced to surrender. This lead to a boost in Russian Morale.

BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC

March 1943

The struggle against German U-boats trying to keep Britain from the resources it needed. The Allies produced ships faster than the German's could take them down which lead to the Allies' victory.

ALLIED BOMBING OF GERMAN AND JAPANESE CITIES

June 1943 - February 1945

The most controversial action by the Allied air forces. A time when the Allied air forces would bomb major cities in Germany and Japan.

FALL OF ITALY

10 June 1943

The first stage in the Axis collapse. This eventually provided air bases for bombing the Germans.

OPERATION OVERLOAD

6 June 1944

The invasion of France, also known as D-Day. This took place on a 60 mile stretch of Normandy beaches.

BATTLE OF THE BULGE

April 1945

A battle fought between Germany and American and Britain. The battle where Hitler lost everything.

HIROSHIMA

6 August 1945

The American drop the atomic bomb killing as many as 84,000 people. Leaving thousands dying of radiation posioning.

NAGASAKI

9 August 1945

The Americans drop another atomic bomb killing about 40,000. This lead to the Japanese surrender.
