Events

Virginia

Approx. 1607

Virginia was founded by the London Company so that the English could
compete for land in the New World.

Massachusetts

1620

Puritans founded Massachusetts so they could have religious freedom.

New Hampshire

1623

John Wheelwright founded New Hampshire to be a fishing colony.

Maryland

1634

Maryland was established by Lord Baltimore after he was not allowed to
settle in Virginia.

Connecticut

1635

Connecticut was founded by Thomas Hooker. It was created as a trade-
based colony and had one of the most well known governments at the
time.

Rhode Island

1636

Rhode Island was formed by Roger Williams after he was thrown out of
Massachusetts.

Delaware

1638

Peter Minuit and The New Sweden Company established Delaware. It
was created because of its trade goods and exports.

North Carolina

1653

North Carolina was established by the Virginians after a royal charter
was decreed by Charles II.

South Carolina

1663

Eight nobles with a royal charter from Charles II established South
Carolina.

New Jersey

1664

New Jersey was founded by Lord Berkley and Sir George Carteret. New
Jersey was orginally ruled by the Swedish and Dutch until it
surrendered and became a royal colony.

New York

1664

New York was founded for the Duke of York. It later became a colony
after the Dutch surrendered to the English.

Pennsylvania

1682

Pennsylvania was settled by WIlliam Penn. It was created to serve as a
haven for his fellow Quakers.

Georgia

1732

Georgia was established by James Edward Oglethorpe and was named
in honor of George II.
