Events

Gymnastics and Basic PE becomes more common in schools

Approx. 1820

Still not a requirement, PE is practiced in many schools in a basic form.

1 room school houses add yards and play times

1850

1866 California became the first state to pass a law requiring twice-per-day exercise periods in public schools.

PE becomes mandatory

April 26, 1866

The YMCA launched its very first chapter

June 6th 1884

The first YMCA taught Physical Education and hygiene to young men

Yard sizes and excursive times in schools increase

1906

The Private school system began making PE mandatory

1925

German immigrants introduce PE to public schools

1925

PE has been mandatory in german schools for years, as they move to the US, they bring this idea with them

Post pearl harbor, PE becomes less fun and more like conditioning

1945

400 Public High schools now offer physical education

1950

Not a national mandate, PE is now offered in many mainstream highschools

With the cold war developing, PE becomes more serious

Approx. 1953

A study is published stating that excersize promotes learning

1960

PE becomes challenged in public schools

1965

Physical Education becomes inclusive for colored and disabled students

1968

As more courses become available to public schools, PE starts to diapear

As more courses become available to public schools, PE starts to diapear

As schools lose funding, PE is cut in most schools

Approx. 1980

As more courses become available to public schools, PE starts to diapear

The International Society for The History on Physical Education and Sport is started

Approx. 1989

With American Children Growing unfit, PE becomes mandatory

1995

America is the most overweight country in the world

Approx. 2000 - 2009

PE is now completely mandatory, this is why i am doing this course
