on March 19 1885, Louis Riel created a provisional government like the one he set up in Manitoba in 1870.

At the time of the red river resistance, the government had not been able to send troops quickly because at that time the railway did not extend to what is now Manitoba. In 1885 that changed they took 11 days for there first troop to in the northwest. And in a month there were 3000 government troops ready to fight the metis

After what happened at duck lake, there were several battles throughout April, sometime close to the end of the month another troop headed toward riel's headquarters in batoche.

On March 25 1885, Dumont and his men raided the local store in duck lake, Saskatchewan, for supplies.
on March 22 1885, the Federal government alerted government troops to prepare for possible action in the northwest
Dumont told his men to hide back while his brothers went to talk to the police, a fight still broke out and gunshots were fired. The start of the first battle in the Resistance
Dumont and his troop went to fish creek, where they ambushed Middleton and some of his troops, forcing them to retreat . headed for the batoche again early in may.
The battle began on May 19th 1885 , with a three-day stand off , after a series of failed attacks , a group of government troops decided to charge the metis front line.

On May 15, Louis riel surrendered, he believed that a public trial might bring attention to the metis struggle against the government.
Dumont and others escaped to the united states, with the defeat at batoche and riel's surrender- The Northwest Rebellion was over

Riel was placed in a Regina jail for eight weeks. On July 20th 1885, Riel's trial began he placed not guilty to a charge. Trial was supposed to be held in Winnipeg, but it was moved to Regina. it was moved because a lot of people from their supported riel but in Regina their would only be English speaking protestants.
Riel's lawyer wanted him to say that he was insane so that they wouldn't kill him but a Louis Riel refused cause he knew he wasn't a lunatic.
After a four-day trial, the jury found riel guilty of treason, but recommended mercy. Riel was Executed on November 16, 1885. Even till this day , the decision to execute riel is controvsial
