Indonesia invades East Timor cliaming to help Timorese concerned about Fretilin's declaration the East Timor is an independent country

Indonesia makes East Timor its 27th province, widespread fighting continues between Indonesian and Fetilin forces

Dili massacre kills 300 Timorese

1991

Xanana Gusmao is captured jailed for life

1992

The Indonesian government collapses

A referendum is held results means that Timor becomes independent of Indonesia
