colony set up with economic intents, i.e to mine gold. largely consisted of young men coming to make their fortune. received help from the native americans (more than 400 died due to starvation and exposure during the first winter). eventually fell out with the natives and the subsequent fighing lasten until 1613 when the settlers kidnaped pocahontas.

the puritans develop a scheme to establish a colony rules by religious laws in america. their religious views were more "extreme" than the high anglican views of the king, and so they received little support.
