NDEA (National Defense Education Act) passes Congress. In turn, NSF (National Science Foundation) receives doubling of funding.

NSF launches summer training institutes for elementary educators. These summer institutes would be 6- to 8- week training seminars that would help get teachers better acquainted with recent discoveries in the many fields of science. One major key aspects of these training programs was to create better teachers with science curriculum.
Also, the programs help teachers be more at ease teaching students science, and to not be embarrassed by eager students' questions (pg. 20)

Apollo 11 (USA) lands on the moon.
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) begun in 1969. It's primary function was to administer standardized tests to students nation wide. Exams on science were implemented. NAEP was meant to be neutral monitoring system. Overtime political pressure has pushed for accountability system on schools (pg. 27)

National Environmental Education Act is passed in turn creates the Office of Environmental Education. This office provides grant money for curriculum development and teacher training. The office was dismember in the 1980's by Congress. This office was revived in 1990. It is now under Environmental Protection Agency. No Child Left Behind Act- "Under the 2002 law, states are required to test students in reading and math in grades 3–8 and once in high school. All students are expected to meet or exceed state standards in reading and math by 2014." This focused funding away from the sciences. The Act ends in 2014 which was replaced by Obama's 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act.

America Competes Act- Congress authorizes appropriations to science and math K-12 programs.). "This bill shares the goals of the President's American Competitiveness Initiative (ACI), a comprehensive strategy to keep America the most innovative nation in the world by strengthening our scientific education and research, improving our technological enterprise, attracting the world's best and brightest workers, and providing 21st century job training." This Act is still used to reauthorize budgetary funds to education.
