March 6, 1857

The Court ruled that Dred Scott was not a citizen and was considered property.

Abraham Lincoln becomes President

November 6, 1860

Lincoln was the 1st Republican President.

Confederacy is formed

February 4, 1861

Jefferson Davis was named the president of the Confederacy until elections could be held.

Firing on Fort Sumter

April 12, 1861

South Carolina feared a trick and the commander of the fort, Robert Anderson, was asked to surrender immediately. But he refused.

The Fall of Richmond

May 20, 1861

Grant captured Petersburg and Richmond in late May of 1861.
