German Protestant princes confronted the Catholic emperor of Austria.
Duke of Olivares wanted to enter the war in favour of Austria to limit the power of France and maintain the dominance of the Hasburgs.

Expulsion moors

1609

*Population loss: 270000 moors from Castile and Aragon were expelled. They were assigned a port in the Mediterranean from where they boarded ships to the northof Africa.
*Economic loss: Moriscos worked in agricultue (specially in Valencia) because of their irrigation systems. They also worked as artisans. Their expulsion left areas unpopulatedand increased poverty.

Gained Barcelona

1652

Philip IV gained Barcelona after 12 years.
