In 1910 Garvey started publishing a newspaper called The Watchmen
In 1915 he left Jamaica for the United States hoping to find support for the UNIA there
In 1914 Marcus Garvey founded the UNIA
In 1916, when he arrived in the United States he went to Harlem,New York City
In 1917, Garvey organized the first american branch of the UNIA at Liberty Hall in Harlem
In 1918, The American UNIA chapter began to grow and had 3,500 members in New York
Garvey created the African Communities League and incorporated it into the UNIA, making it the UNIA
In 1922 Garvey was indicted for fraudulently using the federal mail
In 1923, he was convicted on this charge and sent to prison
In 1927, President Calvin Coolidge freed Garvey but ordered him deported as an undesirable alien.
In 1927, Garvey was released from prison
He failed to proceed the UNIA and died in 1940
