Events

Washington held his first full cabinet meeting.

February 25, 1793

The Department of the Navy was the first new position added in 1798.

1798

The Department of the Navy is now part of the Department of Defense.

The Department of the Interior was added.

1849

The Department of Agriculture was added.

1862

The Post Office Department was created.

1872

Labor and Commerce arose as the nation underwent rapid industrialization.

1903

Labor and Commerce was soon split into two.

The Department of Labor and Commerce split into two separate departments.

1913

The Department of the Navy was renamed the Department of Defense.

1947

The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare was created.

April 11, 1953

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) was created.

1965

The Department of Education was created.

1979

The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare begun focusing on only heath, and was renamed the Department of Health and Human Services.

1979

The Department of Energy was added.

August 1979

The Department of Homeland Security was added.
