Rupert's Land is sold by the HBC to the Government.

This is a negative on the Metis side because their land and home has been sold to a more powerful force.

This is a positive for the Government because they now have more land, which means expansion of the country.

National Metis Committee

1868

Louis Riel Returns to the Red River and forms the National Metis Committee

This is a positive for the Metis because now they have more of a voice, giving them a higher source of power.

This is a negative for the Government because the Metis are now a stronger force, and are opposing the collection of the land they've purchased.

Riel Makes the First Move

1869

Riel takes Schultz into custody, executes Thomas Scott.

This was a positive for the Metis because they had gained the upper hand. They had control over that area, and had proved it. It was clear that they were a force to be reckoned with now.

This was a negative for the government, because they now had more to deal with. It wasn't a matter of just taking the land now. They had to seem as though they were doing the right thing but everything pointed to them being in the wrong.

Manitoba is Created

1870

This was a positive for the Metis because now their land was guaranteed, they could deal with themselves and keep themselves governed how they please.

This was a positive for the Government as well, because they had the land guaranteed to themselves as well. They didn't have to worry about rebellio0n anymore.

Meeting in Batoche

1884

Riel is voted as political advisor and leader.

This was a positive for the Metis because they have a leader and are now organized again.

This is a negative for the government because Riel was recognized as a murderer, due to the execution of Thomas Scott.

Métis Seize Control of St. Anthony's Church

1885

They take hostages and cut the telegraph lines at Clarke's Crossing.

This is a positive for the Metis because they have begun to make an impression.

This is a negative for the government because they've lost an important resource.

Cree nation kills indian agent and 8 other white people.

Riel Surrenders

15 May 1885

Riel gives up and is sent to Regina.

This is a negative for the Metis, for they had lost their leader, and they knew they had lost.

This was a positive for the government because they had gotten a terrorist,

Louis Riel is Hanged

Riel is hanged in Regina for treason.
