Events

The United Nations is created in San Francisco.

June 1945

The United Nations is created in San Francisco. Canada is one of the original members to sign the Charter. The original goal of the UN was to prevent another global conflict.

the NATO was created

1949

NATO – the North Atlantic Treaty Organization – is created as a military defense alliance because of fears created by the Cold War with Russia and its allies. In response The Eastern Bloc countries sign The Warsaw Pact in 1955.

Canada sends troops to the Korean War

1950 - 1953

Korea: Canada sends 27, 000 troops to the Korean War in a United Nations-supported military action. This was peace making.

Lester Pearson becomes Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations.

1952

Suez, Egypt: First U.N. peacekeeping troops, negotiated by Lester Pearson, prevents war.

1956

Lester Pearson wins the the Noble Peace Prize.

1957

Diefenbaker’s Conservatives cancel the Canadian fighter plane.

Cuban Missile Crisis

The U.S. and Soviet Union come close to nuclear war.

Canada participates in a U.N. peacekeeping mission to Cyprus.

1964

Cyprus is located in the Eastern Mediterranean, south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel and Palestine, north of Egypt, and southeast of Greece.

Vietnam War

1965 - 1973

Pierre Trudeau visits Communist China on a peace mission.

Pierre Trudeau visits Communist Cuba

End of Cold War

1989

Berlin Wall comes down, symbolizing the end of Cold War.

Soviet Union dissolves into 15 countries.

Peace making.

Canada sends troops to support the U.S. in the Gulf War against Iraq. This action was Peace making.

Bosnia and Croatia

1992 - 1995

In 1991, ethnic wars broke out in the former Yugoslavia. Until 1992, the war spread to the Republic of Bosnia- Herzegovina, which formed part of Yugoslavia.

Somalia

1992

One night, members of the Canadian Airborne Regiment arrested a Somali teenager found wandering in the Canadian base camp. The teen was tortured and beaten to death during the night.

Civil war and chaos in Haiti

1993 - 1997

Canada sends soldiers and later police.

Rwanda

1994 - 1995

The president of a party died, after that, this party started to kill another party’s members. Just because they thought this party killed the president of their party. Then the slaughter happened which also called “ 100 days of slaughter’’.
