The UN was created

June 1945

The United States is created in San Francisco. Canada is one of the original members to sign the Charter. The original goal of the UN was to prevent another global conflict like World War II

Soviet Spy Ring

September 1945

Soviet spy Igor Gouzenko defects to Canada and exposes a Russian spy ring to the government in Canada

NATO was created

1949

NATO, which is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is created as a military defense alliance because Russia and its allies created fear. In response, the Eastern Bloc countries sign Warsaw Pact in 1955.

Korean War

1950 - 1953

Canada sends 27,000 troops to the Korean War in a United Nations-supported military action which was peace-making.

Lester Pearson as a ambassador

1952

Lester Pearson becomes Canada's ambassador to the United Nations.

Suez Crisis

1956

Suez, Egypt: First U.N peacemaking troops, negotiated by Lester Pearson, prevents war.

Lester Pearson wins the Nobel Peace Prize because of his suggestion for peacemaking in Suez and Egypt.

Avro Arrow Project

1959

The Avro Arrow is a state of the art supersonic jet aircraft. Prime Minister Diefenbaker's Conservatives cancel the Avro Arrow project.

Cuban Missile Crisis

1962

Cuban Missile Crisis is when the U.S and Soviet Union come close to nuclear war. Prime Minister Diefenbaker preferred that the United Nations send a fact finding mission to Cuba, and he implied that he did not believe the U.S photographs.

Peacemaking in Cyprus

Canada participates in a U.N. peacekeeping mission to Cyprus. Cyprus is the third largest and third most popular island in the Mediterranean. It is located south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, north of Egypt, and southeast of Greece
