Sputnik 1

Approx. Oct. 4 1957

First artificial satellite.

Sputnik 2

Approx. November 3, 1957

To study the effects of space on a biological creature (Dog). Doggo named Laika.
She only survived 2 days and there was no way to retrieve the satellite.

Mercury Redstone 2

Approx. January 31, 1961

Sent up Ham the chimpanzee. The goal was to obtain physiological data. Ham performed the procedures well. Ham survived and lived out the rest of his days.

Vostok 1

April 12, 1961

First man to be up in space named Yuri. Was remote controlled from the ground. Was in space for an hour and a half. Landed in Egypt and people thought he was an Alien.

Freedom 7

May 5, 1961

First American human to enter space. His name was Alan Shepard. Was able to control the ship.

Gemini Missions

April 8, 1964

Helped us learn that astronauts could be in space with a space suit (Space Walk),

Marina 4

November 28, 1964

Was the 4th in a series to do a fly by exploration. Changes Scientists idea about life on mars.

Apollo 11

Approx. July 16, 1969

First successful moon landing. People were aboard.

Pioneer 10

March 2, 1972

First spacecraft to travel through the asteroid belt. The first spacecraft to make direct observations and obtain close-up images of Jupiter.

Mariner 10

November 3 1973

Made to measure Mercury's environment and atmosphere. First satellite to visit mercury.

Voyager 2

Aug. 20 1977

Was built to study the outer planets of our Solar System. Still the only spacecraft to have visited the outer planets.

Voyager 1

Approx. September 5, 1977

Took advantage of rare planetary alignment. Was to study the outer solar system. Still going. Heading to the Ort Cloud.
