Led to the end of the monarchy. king Louis was executed and Napoleon Bonaparte took power.

Haitian Revolution

1791 - 1804

Slave rebellion that ended slavery and French control over the colony. Largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western hemisphere

Napoleonic Wars

1803 - 1815

Series of wars pitting the French pitting the French Empire against many European powers. Led Napoleon Bonaparte

Louisiana Purchase


Land deal between the United States and France. Approximately 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River was purchased for 15,000,000

Congress of Vienna

1814 - 1815

Meeting of 4 European powers that had defeated Napoleon. Met to establish a new balance of power and prevent imperialism in Europe and maintain peace between the powers.

Mexican Independence


War against Spain led by a priest. Priest Costilla was killed. Jose Maria Morelos and Vicente Guerrero then led the war to victory and the Spanish were forced to leave.

Greek Independence


successful war waged against the ottoman Empire to gain independence for Greece

Central American Independence


Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica gained independence as Central America from Spain

South American Independence


Revolution of volunteers led by Francisco de Miranda. He was unsuccessful twice. Simon Bolivar was defeated repeatedly but was successful in Colombia winning Independence.

Unification of Italy

1848 - 1870

Movement to unite Italy into one political and cultural entity

American Civil War

1861 - 1865

War between the North and the South. Started after the southern states succeeded from the Union after the election of Abraham Lincoln. The Union won and slavery was ended.

Unification of Germany

1862 - 1871

many small states wanted a nation that was united, powerful and influential but not all politicians were in favor. Began during the Napoleonic Wars and took place at the conclusion of the Franco Prussian War.
