Robert Hooke had a microscope and also had a cork, he saw it under the microscope and then discovered there is such a thing as cells. He named them this because he said it looked like a cell under the microscope.
In 1674, Anton van Leeuwenhoek invented the weird looking simple microscope. It used 1 tiny lens, and was a good little tool.
