The first railroad is built. It connects Tokyo and port of Yokohama.

1872

Japan forces Korea to open three ports to Japanese traders.

1876

Japan and China agree that they will not send armies into Korea.

1885

Japan and China fight Sino-Japanese War. Japan gains territory and colonies.

1894

Japan and Russia fight Russo-Japanese War. Japan gains more territory.

1904

Major private railways are nationalized in Japan.

1906

Japan annexes Korea.

1910

Japan sides with Britain in WWI, but does not play major role in war.

1914

Tokyo Station is completed and becomes central railway station.

Japan invades Manchuria.

1931

Japan attacks U.S. at Pearl Harbor.

1941

Japan surrenders to end WWII in the Pacific.

Japanese railways are in bad conditions after WWII.

The first high-speed Shinkansen route opens.
