An aptitude for drawing and a love of glamour led him to study fashion design at East Sydney Technical College.
Perry opened his first atelier, with a focus on corsetry, tailored sheaths and made-to-measure designs.
Perry relocated his salon in 1994 to Double Bay, Sydney, where he built up his clientele to include high profile celebrities, social identities and personalities
Perry was one of the designers at the inaugural Australian Fashion Week in 1995. He has shown annually at AFW since 1997.
Perry launched his Ready-to-Wear collection in 2004, followed by Alex Perry Accessories in 2006
In 2008, he launched Alex Perry Brides
