Lester B. Pearson was a politician, statesman, public servant, and a professor. He was Canada's Prime Minister from 1963 through 1968, and made sure Canada did not get involved in the Vietnam War. Pearson also won the 1937 Nobel Peace Prize for organizing the United Nations during the Suez Crisis. Not only did he win the Nobel Peace Prize but he is considered one of the most influential Canadian from the 20th century.

A refugee is a person outside of their home country after persecution or some kind. After the St, Louis incident during World War 2 when a ship full of Jews trying to escape Nazi Germany from concentration camps got rejected by Canada, many canadians felt as though they should from then on accept refugees. During the conflict in Vietnam America began to draft (conscript) citizens to go and fight in the war, however many of the Americans escaped, and found a temporary home in Canada (however many stayed to live in Canada even after the war ended).

When World War 2 finally came to an end, one delegate from 51 countries (including Canada) created the charter for the formation of the United Nations. The UN was given three powers for and aggressor nation who creates conflict:
1.)condemn the aggressor through speech
2.)use economic sanctions (urging other UN members to not trade with the aggressor nation.
3.)respond using the military by sending in an armed force to deal with the conflict.
Also there were five special countries who had a veto power (Britain, France, China, United States, and Russia), which means they have the right to reject a decision or proposal made.
The United Nations also formed the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. Both of these organizations were formed to get rid of famine, disease, and to protect human rights.

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) or a.k.a North Atlantic Alliance is a defense system consisting of 28 countries (mainly European or North American) including Canada. This organization states to agree to mutual defense in response to an attack from any external nation. NATO was also more than willing to use nuclear weapons, or have a total nuclear war as a last resort. This was mainly created for mutual defense.

The Massey Commission was for examining Canadian culture from the United States perspective. This was the first step to preserving Canadian culture due to the fact that Canada felt threatened by the U.S. culturally.

The Colombo Plan was designed to strengthen the economic and social development of countries in the Asia-Pacific region on the globe. It was used as human resource development, and Canada was involved with the Colombo Plan for being one of the funding members of this organization. However, presently, Canada is no longer a founder of the Colombo Plan.

The AVRO Arrow (CF-105 ARROW), was a "supersonic" jet and within 9 years of development and blueprints, the plans got cancelled and destroyed. This was one time Canada felt as though they could have been a technical leader but lost it. The cost of the jet estimated around $3.5 - 5 million dollars, which meant no one could afford it.
The intent of this was for it to fly in the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force)

The Suez Crisis was a conflict over the Suez Canal between Egypt and Israel, but also involved the United Nations. This conflict gave the opportunity for Canada to be involved as a leading role. Because of Canadas success in ending the conflict, Lester Pearson won the 1937 Nobel Peace Prize for organizing the United Nations accordingly.

NORAD (North American Air Defense Command) is and organization formed by the United States. However, during the feud between America and the Soviet Union Canada was directly in the middle of the shooting range between the two countries. Canada joined the United States and also contributed to the program by contributing $300 million dollars to the organization.
NORAD had 3 radar station to detect the Soviet Union's missiles,and long distance bobmers.

Even though Terry Fox died 34 years ago his legacy is still alive today. Terry ran 5373 km in 143 days in support of cancer research. His goal was to run across Canada, but died when the cancer he had been diagnosed with reach his lungs. Terry had been diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) when he was just 18 years old.

After the Liberals came up into power, wages and pensions were raised, and trade union restrictions were removed.
The government also began a dramatic movement, which included modernizing Quebec, the economy, politics, the education system, and cultural views. They also declined the any influence of the Roman Catholic Church and bought out hydro companies to strengthen the economy of Quebec.

CIDA is the Canadian International Development Agency and was created under the Canadian government by Pierre Trudeau. Its main purpose is to administrate foreign aide in developing countries. In 2013 CIDA became involved with the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The October Crisis began when members of the FLQ (Front de Liberation du Quebec) kidnapped James Cross and the only way they would release him from there custody would be for the government to release the other FLQ members out of prison. After the government refused the release of the other FlQ members, the rest of the members captured and killed Pierre Laporte, who was later found dead in the trunk of a car.
Trudeau realized that these kidnappings needed to be stopped and put in to play, The War Measures Act. over 450 people were detained because of the re-establishment of this act.
Eventually the government came up with a compromise with the members of the FLQ; In return for James Cross, the members of the FLQ would be release and given a direct pass to Cuba.

Not including Quebec, but most Canadians thought the Constitution was settled. It was Malroney's job the get Quebec to agree, and sign the constitution.
After negotiating things out with Quebec, other Provinces realized they could do the same so they spoke up and said what they wanted more control of the resources they provide for the rest of the (mainly Alberta and Newfoundland).

NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) was the agreement for tree trade within North America, this also included Mexico. However, Canada felt threatened because they thought as though there companies would leave and establish in Mexico due to paying the workers smaller wages. When in reality, the companies wanted to stay established in Canada due to educated, trained, and skillful workers.

The ultimate goal of the Kyoto Accord is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses being emitted into the Earths atmosphere.
Canadian involvement included signing the protocol in 1997 under the Liberal government vowing to reduce 6% of greenhouse gasses by 2012. But by 2011 Canada became the first to make an official withdraw from the accord.

The Nisga Treaty was the first modern treaty British Columbia was ever apart of. This treaty included Nisga operation of its own government, health education and social service funding, $196.1 million dollars. Also, 2091 square kilometers of land, and water reservation to help domestic agriculture and for industrial purposes.
The Nisga Treaty was between the Nisga nation, B.C.'s government, and the government of Canada.
