I. Physical Education Begins

First sport lesson in school/first teacher of physical education

1774

The school gave physical training daily. Johann Friedrich taught gymnastics in school.

Mandatory Physical Education

1814

Denmark's Bill of 1814 establishes the first mandatory physical education.

First school to have a class on physical education

1820

Schools began teaching gymnastics in class and the importance of hygiene and care for your body.

Hartford Seminary is founded

1823

Catherine Beecher founded the Hartford Seminary which was taught the earliest forms of aerobics to girls.

First physical education teacher in America

1825

Charles Beck became the first physical education teacher in America at Round Hill School.

II. Physical Education Spreads to Schools

First College Gymnasium

1826

Charles Follen helped create the first college gymnasium at Harvard.

First city to require physical activity in school

1853

Boston was the first required students to take part in physical activity in school.

The Normal Institute for physical education is founded

1861

This institution was used to train men and woman a form of gymnastics on flexibility and agility.

Football is invented

1879

Walter Camp invented it at Yale University.

First YWCA

1884

The YWCA is the first open gym for women to go to.

III. The Idea of Sports

Invention of Baseball

1839

Abner Doubleday invented baseball in Cooperstown, New York.

Invention of Ice Hockey

1870

Ice hockey was first invented in Canada and the first match was played in 1875 in Montreal.

Invention of Basketball

1891

Dr. James Naismith invented basketball at YMCA.

Swimming is first used

1896

Swimming was one of the first sports played in the Olympic games in Athens.

Kickball is invented

1917

Nicholas C. Seuss invented kickball in Ohio and taught it to boys and girls.

IV. Influences on Modern Day Physical Education

Special Olympics begin

1968

Contained 1000 athletes from the U.S. and Canada.

Human kinetics is created

1974

Created by Rainer Martens and his wife Marilyn because publishers were needed in the education field.

Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act created

2004

Required that all school districts have a meal program for the students.

Study finds that recess improves student behavior

2010

The studies showed that physical activity help improve the students academically.

Obesity is at its all time high

2011

The number of overweight children have tripled to 15%.
