Rei was quickly placed into a foster home because of her young age. The family had a 3 year old son, so they were still prepared to take care of a young girl. The family cared for her and kept her as happy as a young child should be. She knew that she wasn't theirs but they at least kept her sheltered from the difficulties that she would face later in her life because of her orphan status.
Rei stayed with this family until she was 2 years and 5 months old, they had all known that this was never going to be a permanent arrangement, but Rei can still remember the mother crying as she was taken away. The family never made the commitment to keep her, and so Rei's case worker had found a promising family that wanted to adopt Rei. They had to let the girl go, in the hopes that she would find a family that loved her.
Rei barely remembers this family, but for the first few years they would send her case worker birthday cards for Rei. These are few of the things that Rei still has today, and sometimes Rei dream about a life where they had taken her. A life where she would have had a mother and a father and an older brother, people to care for her and make her feel wanted.
