Missouri Compromise

1820

This kept balance of power in senate between slave states and free states. Slavery was banned from the Louisiana territory north of the Missouri's southern border.

To much people began emigrating to escape famine in Ireland.

Wilmot Proviso

1846

Slavery was banned in lands from Mexican Territory this was passed by the House of Representatives but was defeated by the senate.

End of Mexican war

1848

Caused problems whether ten states would be free or slave states.

Compromise of 1850

Compromise made between Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and Stephan Douglas that made California a free state and formed the fugitive slave act to appease the south.

Uncle Tom's Cabin

1852

A novel published that exposed the evils of the slave system. It was popular in the north and Europe. The book changed the way people looked at slavery.

Kansas Nebraska Act

1854

Nebraska was divided into two. People died because of the fights over if if it should be a free or slave state. One side became a slave state and the others free state. The republican party was formed this year.

Dred Scott Case

1857

Scott sued for his freedom but the court said he was property and that he couldn't sue. This made the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional.

Harper's Ferry

1859

Harper's followers raided federal arsenal. They wanted to led and stat a slave revolt. They caught and were charged guilty of murder and were hanged.

South Carolina seceded because of Lincoln winning. They left with five other states made their own constitution that allows slavery.
