THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA WERE COMPLETED IN 2500 B.C. THIS PERIOD THERE WAS EVIDENCE OF ELABORATE FURNITURE AND DESIGN WITH ANIMAL LEGS, PAW FEET,GILDING, AND INLAY.

GREECE

1000 BC - 500 BC


THE GREEKS STARTED TO USE STONE TO REPLACE WOOD AS ARCHITECTURAL MATERIAL. THEY DEVELOPED THE DORIC, IONIC,AND CORINTHIAN ORDERS OF ARCHITECTURE. THEY ALSO DESIGNED FURNITURE WITH SABOR LEGS,METAL, AND MARBLE.

ROMAN

500 BC - 0 AD


THE ROMANS DEVELOPED CONCRETE, THE ARCH, AND THE DOME.

BYZANTINE

500 AD - 1000 AD


DURING THE MIDDLE AGES THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE FLOURESED ADDING ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPTS AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF BASILICA CHURCHES.

ROMANESQUE

1000 AD - 1500 AD


THE ROMANESQUE STYLE DEVELOPED FROM THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE ROMAN BASILICA INTO CHRISTIAN CHRUCHES WITH HIGH-WALLED NAVES SUPPORTED BY MASSIVE VAULTING SYSTEMS. GOTHIC STYLE WAS INTRODUCED WITH OAK FURNITURE,TRACERY,WROUGHT IRON HINGES,TREFOIL, AND QUATREFOIL.

MOORISH

1095 AD - 1144 AD


ISLAMIC RELIGION SPREAD THROUGHOUT SPAIN LEAVING ITS INFLUENCE EVIDENT IN ITS FURNITURE AND ARCHITECTURE.

RENAISSANCE

1500 AD - 1600 AD


DURING THIS TIME THE STYLES MAINLY USED WERE INFLUENCED BY QUEEN ELIZABETH AND EARLY JACOBEAN. THESE STYLES HAD STRONG GOTHIC INFLUENCES, DIAMONDS POINT PATTERNS,BUN FEET, CUP AND COVER TURNING AND OAK AND WALNUT FURNITURE.

BAROQUE

1600 AD - 1700 AD


THE BAROQUE PERIOD WAS INFLUENCED BY KING LOUIS THE XIII,XIV, AND THE LATE JACOBEAN. BAROQUE FURNITURE IS HEAVY WITH CARVINGS, BEAD AND BALUSTER TURNINGS, STRETCHERS, AND FLEMISH "S' AND "C" SCROLLS.

ROCOCO

1700 AD - 1770 AD


ROCCOCO WAS ALSO CALLED THE REGENT PERIOD AFTER THE DEATH OF LOUIS XIV. THE ROCOCO STLYE WAS SIMILAR TO BAROQUE BUT HAD GENTAL CURVES AND ORNIMENTS BASED ON NATURAL FORMS. EXAMPLES OF FURNITURE DESIGNS ARE BROKEN SCROLLED PEDIMENTS, CABRIOLE LEGS AND CHIPPENDALE INFLUENCES.
