Their dad brings home a "whirligig" that sparks their interest in flying.

Orville & Wilbur start a newspaper in Dayton, OH.

The printing press used to print the weekly paper was built by Orville

Orville gets typhoid fever.

1896

Typhoid fever is caused by unclean water and food infected by human waste products.

The Wright brothers discover safety bicycles

1897

The brothers like the bicycles so much they decide to start a shop building safety bikes.

The brothers begin their experiments in flying

1899

Based on the achievements of Samuel Langley, Otto Lillenthal and Octave Chanute - the Wright brothers began to see that human flight might be possible. Their bike shop was used as a funding source for their experiments.

First flight at Kitty Hawk

Their glider is able to fly to 852 feet in the air for 59 seconds.

The brothers build a new glider

The new glider uses the 4 principles of flight - lift, thrust, gravity and drag. This allows the glider to fly longer and at higher altitudes.
