Kids get to know each other, establish norms, build a sense of community, "buy in" to second grade.
Kids brainstorm the characteristics of a good friend using related read alouds to guide their thinking. They then create "friend silhouettes" on black butcher paper with the features of a friend added on with construction paper; i.e. a loving heart, a helping hand, etc.
Kids learn about Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligence. They take surveys to determine their own areas of intelligence and make a class book.
