The summer seminar consisted of geography content sessions provided by Dr. Lisa Keys-Mathews, pedagogy sessions focused on the problem-based geographic inquiry model, and lesson study to prepare problem-based geographic inquiry curriculum materials. The lesson study team consisted of the project geographer Dr. Lisa Keys-Mathews, Dr. James Howell, Dr. Lamont Maddox, and a middle school geography teacher.
The seminar week allowed Drs. Howell and Maddox to refine materials and processes that would later be used with a larger group of teachers during the full lesson study beginning in the fall of 2016.

Lesson study teams worked in Hattiesburg, MS and Florence, AL. The design team in Mississippi continued its work from the previous year by adding another lesson to the unit on global trade. The team in Alabama prepared a civil rights oriented poverty lesson.
The content focus of this seminar was Civil Rights and the Negro Travelers' Green Book (examining the spatial nature of Jim Crow).
