Hernando de Soto (c. 1495–1542) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who participated in the conquests of Central America and Peru alongside Francisco Pizarro. He is best known for leading the first major European expedition into the interior of southeastern North America (1539–1542), traveling through present-day Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. De Soto died of fever on the banks of the Mississippi River in 1542, and the remnants of his expedition, led by Luis de Moscoso, eventually reached Mexico. His journey brought the first sustained contact between Europeans and many Native American peoples of the Southeast, but it also introduced devastating epidemics that decimated indigenous populations.
