Merge Timelines

To merge two timelines into one, follow these steps:

  1. Open one of the timelines you would like to merge and download it as a CSV or Excel file.
  2. Open the other timeline. Import the downloaded CSV or Excel file of the first timeline into this timeline.

To download a timeline, click the Share button above it, then the Spreadsheet item, and pick your File Type in the dialog that opens.

Step 2 requires a paid plan: importing a spreadsheet is not available on the free plan.

You can merge any timeline you can edit, including one shared with you as a collaborator. You cannot merge someone else's public timeline into your own, because visitors can't download a timeline as a spreadsheet.

Back Up Before You Merge

Merging doesn't delete anything from the timeline you import into. The imported events are added alongside the events that are already there.

There is no way to undo a merge, though. Reversing one means deleting the imported events yourself, which is quickest in the Bulk Editor.

So if you are at all unsure about a merge, duplicate the timeline you are importing into and merge into the copy instead. That way you still have the original if the result isn't what you wanted, and you can delete whichever timeline you don't need.

What Carries Over

The spreadsheet holds each event's layer, name, notes, dates, icon and color, and that is what the other timeline receives. The events arrive as new events. Each one goes into the layer with the same name on the other timeline, and Preceden creates any layer that isn't there yet.

Anything the spreadsheet has no column for stays behind on the first timeline:

  • Images
  • Connected events and percent complete
  • Milestones, event shapes, and the Hide name, Hide dates and Hide duration settings
  • Dependencies. A dependent event keeps the start date it had when you downloaded the file, but it no longer moves when the event it depended on changes.

The merged timeline also has to fit within the 1,500-event limit. If the two timelines hold more than that between them, the import is rejected before any events are added.
